About Sargacast
Sargacast tells you how much sargassum there is at each Florida beach before you leave home.
Who runs it
Sargacast is an independent project, operated from Florida by one person. The index is an estimate for guidance, not official information.
Where the data comes from
- Satellite: NOAA's AFAI index, which picks out floating seaweed in satellite images.
- Wind: the National Weather Service forecast for each beach.
- Water temperature: NOAA CO-OPS coastal stations.
- Reports: what people at the beach tell us from the sand.
